Felt
Quick Facts Felt
is an incredibly versatile product with thousands of applications in
our lives every day. Felt is in our homes, in our automobiles,
in our clothing and in our workplaces. Follow this link to get
a quick glimpse of the principal applications and qualities of felt.
What
Is Felt? Wool felt.
Pressed felt. Synthetic felt. Felt blends. Woven felt.
If you are confused about the distinctions and major groups of felt
products, this is a good place to begin.
Technical
Felt Technical felt is pressed wool felt manufactured
to very exacting specifications for very specific uses. It is
available only in sheets.

Overview
of SAE Felt Types Felt
is extremely versatile, and can be extremely complex. There are
literally dozens of types of felts within the SAE specifications.
To get a quick look at the major types and their qualities, this is
a good link to pursue. If you need more technical data, check
out other links below.
Felt
Tech Data Here is a chart
of the qualities and properties of 13 of the most common pressed wool
felt products. You can also link to more specific datasheets for
these felts.
Specific
Felt Data:
- S.A.E.
F-1 SAE F-1 felt is suitable for
oil retention in installations where the felt is not compressed for
feeding low viscosity or light oil and where unusual strength and
hardness are required. Washers, bushings, wicks, door bumpers, polishing
blocks and parts where wear and resistance to abrasion are required
are typical applications.
- S.A.E.
F-2 and F-3
SAE F-2 and SAE F-3 are recommended for vibration mountings and the
same general purposes as F-1 but where a felt of slightly lower quality
is satisfactory.
- S.A.E.
F-5, F-6
and F-7
SAE F-5, SAE F-6 and SAE F-7 are recommended for dust shields, wipers,
grease retainer washings vibration mountings, and uses where a resilient
felt is required.
- S.A.E.
F-10 and F-11
SAE F-10 and SAE F-11 are recommended for grease and oil retention
where the felt is confined and compressed in assembly. Also recommended
for dust shields under less severe operating conditions where F-5,
F-6, and F-7 are not required.
- S.A.E.
F-13 and F-15
SAE F-13 and SAE F-15 are recommended for sound deadening, chassis
strips, spacers, dust shields, pedal pads, dash liners, and for mechanical
purposes where abrasion and wear are not important factors.
- S.A.E.
F-26 SAE F-26 is suitable for packing
and padding when held in place between other materials. This grade
should not be used for mechanical purposes.
- S.A.E.
F-50 SAE F-50 is recommended for
ball and roller bearing oil retainer washers and small dust excluding
washers. Also for mechanical purposes where an accurate, thin, smooth
high grade felt is required.
- S.A.E.
F-51 SAE F-51 is recommended for
the same general uses as F-50 but in installations where tolerances
and length of life are not as important. Also for thin cut parts such
as gaskets and liners.
- S.A.E.
F-55 SAE F-55 is recommended for
anti-squeak strips and for lining when cemented to fiber board or
metal panels.
Woven
Felt Woven felt is
an excellent choice when you need flexibility and conformity...the ability
to flex and bend. Woven felt can also be produced to much tighter
tolerances than pressed felt.
Synthetic
Felt Though very
versatile, there are rare times when wool felt must give way to synthetic
felt. This is especially true when low cost is a consideration.
Polyester felt, wool and polyester felt blends, plushes and velvets
fall into the category of synthetic felt.
